Waikato Expressway closed

The Waikato Expressway remains closed in both directions before the Tamahere Drive off-ramp, due to an ongoing clean up following contamination from a rolled truck.

There is no ETA on re-opening yet.

The detour for northbound traffic is to use Victoria off-ramp, right on SH1B, left on Tauwhare Rd, and right to get back on SH1. Southbound traffic: in reverse.

The Waikato Expressway is closed in each direction south of Cambridge Road due to an extensive clean up following a truck roll near the Tamahere Drive off-ramp.

The truck’s load has spilled across a significant area and contains contaminated asbestos material, which means the clean-up requires a full closure of the Expressway for safety.

People should avoid the area or follow the signposted detour, which is via State Highway 26 and State Highway 1B.

The Expressway will reopen once the clean-up is complete, which may take a few hours.
