The 65-year-old Piarere Hall was still smoldering this morning after being “extensively damaged” by fire last night.

Police at the SH29 scene just before 10am today told The News fire crews were called to the hall about 10.30pm.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told The News the hall was “fully involved” when crews from Tirau, and water tankers from Matamata, Cambridge and Tokoroa arrived.

Investigations were continuing regarding the cause of the fire they said.

Built in 1958, the hall has been a popular venue for bowling, dancing, 21st birthdays, weddings and cabarets over the years.

It has also hosted many Young Farmers’ Club, Federated Farmers and garden circle gatherings.
