The News understands the car hit the pedestrian refuge after a collision involving a second vehicle. Police spoke to both drivers after the accident. Police enquiries are continuing.

No one was injured when a car crashed into a pedestrian refuge island in Cambridge’s Queen Street on Saturday, but when Waipā District Council staff look at repairing it, they will consider whether any changes are needed to the structure.

Police were called around 11.55am to the single vehicle crash at the refuge between Woolworths and Ingham car yard involving an east bound vehicle. There were no reports of injuries although a St John ambulance also attended. The bay was empty at the time of the crash.
The road was closed while contractors cleared the scene.
“Council will look at the barrier repair as part of its usual process and consider whether any changes to the crossing point are needed, but at this stage there’s no indication the crash points to a problem with the crossing itself,” said council Transport manager Bryan Hudson.
The refuge island was one of two mentioned by The News columnist Mary Anne Gill in a recent column. Hudson said the islands rely on both drivers and pedestrians knowing how to use them and let people cross in two stages at their own pace while keeping traffic moving. Gill argued the bays confused both pedestrians and motorists.
