Toys and trouble

Sharing footpath space

As mentioned in a recent column, speeding cyclists and e-scooter riders on pavements are a cause of community concern in Cambridge.

Deb Hann

Last week I did a beat patrol focused specifically on cyclists on the footpath travelling through the CBD after school. I was pleased with the cooperation of cyclists, dismounting or using the cycle path instead. E-scooter riders were also educated on the need to slow right down and be mindful of pedestrians.

In other news, last week, we had an incident that highlighted the risk associated with buying realistic looking plastic guns as toys. Two youths were seen by a member of the public pointing what appeared to be a black pistol at each other on the roadside. When told to put it away, one then ‘fired’ at the woman as she drove away. This was reported immediately to police by the woman who was understandably shaken.

Staff located the youths and seized a gun, found to be similar to a bb gun. Given the outward likeness of the gun to a real pistol in colour and design, the outcome could have been very different in other circumstances.  Please ensure that such toys purchased for or by your children, are obviously toys in their design. I encourage retailers to also think twice before stocking any toy gun which by his size and design could be misrepresented or mistaken for the real thing.

Early last Sunday morning, a vehicle was located crashed on Carlyle Street, Leamington in circumstances that indicated those involved would have sustained an injury. No one was at the scene when police arrived.  If you have any information relating to this incident, please contact 105 and quote file ref 260509/3561.

Cambridge News 11 September 2025

Still in Cambridge, coordination and quick responses from police and Cambridge retailers resulted in two good catches in the past week. In the first, a male shoplifter was arrested for theft from the Warehouse Cambridge. Police arrived just as he walked out the door, concealing items. He was also found to be breach court bail conditions. The male appeared in court accordingly.

In a second incident, staff responded to a report about a group of five people in two separate vehicles. One of the group was believed to have stolen from Mitre 10 Mega Cambridge. One vehicle was stopped leaving the store and the second close-by. The goods were recovered and the offender and related parties identified.
