Halfway there

The repainting of the 116-year-old Victoria Street Bridge in Cambridge has reached a major milestone this month, with work now at the halfway point.

The project, which also includes carrying out minor maintenance, will help to ensure it remains in good condition for years to come. It has been underway since late 2022 and is expected to be complete by early to mid-2024.

Waipā District Council service delivery group manager Dawn Inglis said it was great to have reached the half-way stage of the project.

“The centre of the bridge is the most challenging area to repaint because the scaffolding is now suspended from the bridge deck. We have to be incredibly careful of weight and other factors as we work.

“The way we’ve had to set up the scaffolding can make it hard for people to see where we’re up to. But the community will be able to catch a first glimpse of the finished, fresh coat of paint from the Cambridge side as work progresses.”.

Inglis said there may be some minor disruption to traffic in the coming months in order to complete the more complex parts of the maintenance in the centre of the bridge, but this would be carried out over short periods of time outside of peak hours.
